FND111 Color Theory for Print

FND111 Color Theory for Print

W1A2

Using the provided template, create three color progressions:

  • One gradation in hue, keeping all of the colors at maximum saturation.
  • One gradation in value, retaining a fixed hue.
  • One gradation in saturation, retaining both a fixed hue and value.
  • How might you use the properties of hue, value, and saturation to verbally describe this color to someone else?
  • Is the color high key, intermediate key, or low key?
  • Differentiate between its value and saturation.
  • Tints: one progression of your chosen hue from full saturation to white.
  • Shades: one progression of your chosen hue from full saturation to black.
  • Tones: three progressions of your chosen hue from full saturation to gray.
  • One progression showing the value becoming lighter.
  • One progression showing the value becoming darker.
  • One progression showing the value unchanged

Create two versions of the same monochromatic design. The composition of shapes and hue should be the same for both versions of the design. Create one version in high-key values with a variety of saturations for a successful composition. Then, create the same design in low-key values with a variety of saturations.

  • Consider the compositional arrangement and placement of elements within the design to create a well-balanced composition.
  • Think about the basic design elements in relation to your hue, value, and saturation choices.
  • Consider how contrasting values and saturation contribute to variety and unity in each design.
  • Traditional (paint) color wheel
  • Additive color wheel
  • Subtractive (process colors) color wheel
  • Why is the idea of a universal color wheel not appropriate?
  • Discuss the concepts of additive and subtractive color mixing.
  • When would you use each of the different color systems? And why?
  • One warm analogous interval—parent colors vary in value and saturation.
  • One cool analogous interval—parent colors vary in value and saturation.
  • One interval from warm to cool—one parent color should be light in value.
  • One interval from warm to cool—one parent color should be dark in value.
  • The first color variation should implement one of your warm to cool intervals
  • The second variation should implement one of your analogous intervals.
In your design you were able to address all of the requirements for this assignment.  Your design is creative and appealing.  The colors that you chose makes your design easy to view and grasp the concept of depth that you show.  It is easy to see and understand the intent of creating depth in your design.

Using the provided template, create three different color palettes that each express a different emotion. The palettes should be contained in one JPEG file and be labeled.

  • One palette should utilize a Triad color strategy.
  • One palette should utilize a Tetrad color strategy.
  • One palette should utilize a color strategy of your choosing: Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary, or Split-Complementary. Be sure to label which strategy you use.
  • I am looking for evidence of you exploring the FREE tutorials that are linked at the top of our project description page.
  • Think about how to abstractly represent your aesthetic/emotional terms. For example, angular shapes = action, anger, aggression.
  • CHECK OUT THE CREATIVE VIDEO TUTORIALS LECTURE.
  • NO text, stamps, brushes or clip-art from third party resources.  All work should be 100% yours!
  • NO outlines around shapes. NO 5 pointed stars.
  • Include the palette and descriptive terms from W4A2 in the white space of your design.

Post your progressions to the discussion area and answer the following using complete sentences in one to two paragraphs:
Identify a color in your immediate surroundings. It could be the color of the wall, a piece of clothing, anything. Discuss it in detail using the three properties of color. Consider the following:

Using the provided template, create five monochromatic progressions each with ten steps of the same hue.
Use the same hue for all progressions, and use a hue other than that shown in the example.

Fellow Classmate Critique

The goal for this assignment was to choose a color and go through the steps of learning to find all the color ranges of a specific color. This video provided helpful tips in showing how to navigate through each step. In all five stages the hue did remain constant. From the appearance of the color that you chose, the colors appear to be evenly spaced along with the selection of your color looks to be at full saturation.

The gradual progression to white, black and making the colors even to the shade of grey are all in line with the required directions. It seems as though you were able to accurately take the concepts and successfully produce the correct outcome. I do not have any comments for improvement. You have done a fantastic job.

W2A1

Using the provided template, create a 12-step color wheel for each of the three color systems:
The center swatch of each color wheel should be filled with the color created when the three primaries for that color wheel are mixed. Be sure to arrange the colors so that one of the primaries is situated in the twelve o'clock position for each system in the provided template.
Post your color wheels to the Discussion Area and answer the following questions using complete sentences in one to two paragraphs. Describe specific examples in your writing to support your ideas.

W2A2

Using the provided template, create the following intervals. The intervals should be contained in one jpeg file and labeled.

W2A3

Working with just circles, create two color variations of the same design using the interval color sets you created in assignment two. Each design should capture the illusion of depth.
Please note that you do not have to use every color in the interval set, but all the colors in the design should be reflected in the interval set. Include the chosen interval under each design.

In the design that your created the colors that are listed in you blend examples are clearly displayed.  You were able to create a great illusion of depth by layering your colors from darkest to the lightest on top and by also changing the size of each circle further increasing the depth of perception as the colors lightened.  I believe that your design with the cooler colors were more effective in creating the illusion.

The design the you created is well balanced and utilizes all of the space allotted causing the viewer to not have to look through a lot of empty space.  You have done a great job with your design and I do not have any comments for improvement.

This exercise has two parts:
Part One: One Color as Two
Using the provided template, your task is to make a single color appear as two different colors. Begin by placing two small rectangles of the same size and color on two backgrounds of different colors. Then, adjust the background colors to produce the most dramatic change possible between the two smaller rectangles. Complete a second variation using a different color for the two middle rectangles.
Part Two: Two Colors as One
Using the provided template, your task is to make two different colors appear to be the same color. Begin by placing two small rectangles of related, but differing, colors on two backgrounds of different colors. Then, adjust the background colors until the smaller middle rectangles both appear to be the same color. Complete a second variation using a new pair of related colors for the two middle rectangles.

W3A3

Using a variety of shapes, create two versions of the same design. One design should be a complementary harmony. The second should be a split-complementary harmony.
Focusing on the principle of contrast, show different ways of using contrast for two effective compositions. The composition of shapes should be the same for both versions of the design.
Consider how you can utilize hue, value, and saturation variations to create low and high contrast relationships. Consider the principles of simultaneous contrast, complementary contrast, and value contrast.
Utilize design principles such as emphasis, scale, and gravity as they relate to your color use.

Have I mentioned yet that I love this school? lol

Former Classmates Critiques

#1 - The parameters of this assignment called for the artist to use an assortment of shapes in creating two separate yet similar designs alternating between a complementary and split-complementary palette. In artistic terms, a complementary palette utilizes colors that are opposite on the color wheel, i.e. red & cyan, while a split-complementary palette results from first selecting a hue and its complement. But instead of using that exact complement, the hues that lie on either side of the complement are selected, ex. Green with orange and pink.

For her work on this assignment, she does a wonderful job of incorporating both design palettes into her piece. The complementary design which uses yellow and blue as the main color themes, showcase as strong sense of contrast. By using the darker color as the background, the viewer’s eye is instantly drawn to the images in the foreground. Her clever use of “afterimage” lends movement to the piece and also provides a sense of rhythm. The split-complementary design however is the more successful of the two. For this design, she utilized a green, purple and pink color palette. While all the elements from the complementary design are present in this image, what makes it a stronger design is her choice to use a lighter color in the background. This serves to shift the focal point where it belongs, on the “sun” on the horizon.

Overall the artist is very successful in meeting the objectives of the assignment. What she has presented is a strong composition that showcases color harmony and utilizes color to engage the viewer.

#2 - This work created by the artist is done in two different color schemes, the first of which is called complementary harmony. This one is done by using only two colors, these colors are called complementary because they are opposites on a color wheel. The second is referred to as a split-complementary harmony, which uses three colors instead of just two. The “split” means that you use a color and the two colors adjacent to the complementary color of you first color choice.

The artist started with an excellent design that allows for plenty of texture and depth. The use of varying shapes to create a sense of movement really sets this design off. The main aspect of color that conflicts in my mind is the fact that the colors appear to be distributed evenly, but the brighter colored ball is in the middle ground instead of the foreground creating a sense of conflict in my mind. The artist had a great choice of hues to use for this piece, they are highly effective at distinguishing between which color scheme is which.

Overall the design was very well done and the colors used shows the level of understanding the artist has about the relationship of complementary colors. The artist shows that a high level of attention was paid to detail from the use of gradient colors and accurate use of opacity.

Consider how ranges of value and saturation add to the aesthetic you wish to convey in each palette. When submitting your palettes, additionally provide a list of words that you associate with the emotion or aesthetic that you are trying to convey in each palette.

Fellow Classmates Critiques

#1 - Good afternoon. You did a fantastic job on your palettes and I think you have an understanding of the triad, tetrad, and monochromatic. All your palettes seem to balance and flow neatly together. In your palettes I love how you used different hues and not the typical standard hues for each palettes.

I admire the tetrad palette, the way you group the particular hues together and changing the value, which harmonize perfectly together. The descriptions of your tetrad palette, I thought, they were a good choice to explain the emotions of your palette because I can really see how the hues and the words group together. Your monochromatic was excellent because I can see how the purple match up with the descriptions and the way you made the purple change at every steps.

Your palettes were organize, and the parent colors was combine the hues into groups. The palettes definitely has value that were ranging from light to dark. And when I look the hues on each palettes, as an example for the triad with the blues, I see dullness and plain; the greens, they say beginning and spring. The tetrad palette: the red says passion, furious, and spicy; the blue is healing, cleanse, and calm; the cyan is relax and ocean; the yellow hue is summer, joy, intelligent, and cheerful.

#2 - For this assignment, the artist was asked to develop three separate color palettes based on knowledge gained from this week’s reading assignments. The first palette a Triad color harmony, consisting of three hues that are equidistant from one another and forming an equilateral triangle on the inside of the color wheel, the second a Tetrad color harmony which uses two sets of complementary colors by drawing a rectangle or square inside the color wheel, the four corners will represent a tetrad harmony. The third palette would be of the artist’s choosing, in this instance the artist chose a monochromatic palette. The artist also had to find associating words for the color palettes.

She did an excellent job in developing her three palettes. Within each palette, she incorporates various tints, tones, shades, values and saturations of her parent colors creating a palette that can be used in a high or low key composition. She also wisely chose the words she felt could be associated with each palette. Her monochromatic palette associated with wealth, royalty and respect, uses purple as its parent color and offers a range of tints, tones and shades. Her triad palette utilizes a yellow-green, pink and ocean blue as the parent color but focuses on more greens, blues and lavenders to depict the associated feelings of nature, calm and tranquility.

One suggestion for the artist to consider with integrating the triad composition more effectively with the associated words would be to incorporate more browns into the palette. Also with the tetrad palette, the artist should consider not grouping like colors in order to achieve more horizontal, vertical and diagonal variance. Overall the artist did a wonderful job in achieving the objective of the assignment and selecting colors and their expressive meanings.

W4A3

Create a design of your choosing, utilizing one of the color palettes from Assignment 2 this week. Be creative with your design. Consider your overall composition in addition to your use of color. Your design choices should help further emphasize the emotion and aesthetic that is being conveyed through the chosen color palette.

This assignment should explore the relationship between shapes and colors to create a mood or tone.  Please make sure to watch all three videos in W4A2 and the tutorial video above for insight on my expectations for this assignment.
